The break looks identical either way. What actually separates a continuation signal from the first warning sign of a reversal.

Watch on YouTubeMarket structure is the sequence of swing highs and lows a price forms over time, and every structural break is really just price taking out a previous swing point. What separates a break of structure from a change of character isn't the mechanics of the break itself, both are just price crossing a prior swing high or low, it's the direction of that break relative to the trend that was already in place.
A break of structure, or BOS, happens when price breaks a prior swing point in the same direction as the existing trend. In an uptrend, that means a new higher high. In a downtrend, it means a new lower low. A BOS is a continuation signal: it reinforces that the trend already in place is still intact and still making fresh progress in its established direction.
A change of character, or CHoCH, happens when price breaks a prior swing point against the existing trend. In an uptrend, that's a break below the most recent higher low. In a downtrend, it's a break above the most recent lower high. A CHoCH is the first structural evidence that the prevailing trend may be losing control, since price has just done something the trend, by definition, wasn't supposed to do.
The break itself looks identical on a chart either way, price crossing a prior swing point. The only thing that determines whether it's labeled a BOS or a CHoCH is which direction that break moves relative to the trend already in place going into it. The same exact price action that would be an unremarkable continuation in one context becomes the first warning sign of a reversal in the other.
A change of character tells you the previous trend has weakened enough to break its own pattern, not that a new trend in the opposite direction is now confirmed. Treating a single CHoCH as an automatic reversal entry skips the confirmation that usually follows: a pullback, then a fresh break of structure in the new direction, which is what actually confirms the character change turned into an established new trend rather than a one-off structural break inside what's still a larger range.
A full trend cycle, in this vocabulary, tends to read as a series of BOS events confirming the trend, followed eventually by a CHoCH that breaks the pattern, followed by a new series of BOS events confirming the fresh trend in the new direction. Reading structure this way turns a chart into a sequence of continuation and reversal signals rather than a single, static read of "uptrend" or "downtrend" that only updates when the bigger picture is already obvious.
